It is with a great amount of sadness that on October 30, 2013 we lost our dear friend, KySTMA Chapter Founder and Past President, Dr. A.J. Powell
Dr. Powell was a native of Henry County, Kentucky and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agronomy at the University of Kentucky. He completed his Ph.D. in Turfgrass Science at Virginia Tech and served two years in the U.S Army at Ft Bliss, Texas. He was employed as Assistant Professor of Agronomy at the University of Maryland from 1969 to 1971 and with Virginia Tech in Turfgrass Extension from 1971 to 1976. Since 1976, Dr. Powell served as an Extension Professor at the University of Kentucky. Over the course of his long career, he wrote for a number of referred publications and magazines concerning turfgrass and was frequently called upon as a nationally-recognized expert to speak on sports turf subjects.
Dr. Powell retired from UK in 2006 after over 30 years and held the title of Professor Emeritus at University of Kentucky (UK). He spent his entire career managing and researching turf in the Transition Zone. Dr. Powell developed the winter fertilization concept of N fertilization of cool season grass, released the Quickstand bermudagrass cultivar, developed chemical programs for control of wild violets and other weed species in lawns, and worked extensively fine tuning the reduction of perennial Poa in bentgrass greens and fairways using PGR’s.
